The National Service Training Program (NSTP) is a government-mandated citizenship course required for all Filipino college students. It aims to enhance civic consciousness and defense preparedness in the youth by developing the ethic of service and patriotism.

You can learn more about NSTP by watching this video:

Why do I have to take NSTP?

As a Filipino citizen, you have to take NSTP in compliance with Republic Act No. 9163. As stated in Section 2 Declaration of Policy:

It is hereby affirmed the prime duty of the government to serve and protect its citizens, in turn, it shall be the responsibility of all citizens to defend the security of the State and in fulfillment thereof, the government may require each citizen to render personal, military or civil service.

Recognizing the youth’s vital role in nation-building, the State shall promote civic consciousness among the youth and shall develop their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being. It shall inculcate in the youth patriotism, nationalism, and advance their involvement in public and civic affairs.

In pursuit of these goals, the youth, the most valuable resource of the nation, shall be motivated, trained, organized, and mobilized in military training, literacy, civic welfare, and other similar endeavors in the service of the nation.

How many NSTP courses will I take?

You will only take two NSTP courses, NSTP-01 and NSTP-02.

In NSTP-01, the training component, you will have interactive discussions on important topics about your impact and contribution to society.

In NSTP-02, the service component, you will create a plan and implement it to address a specific need of the partner center or community.

What are the NSTP Service Components?

When you take NSTP, you can choose from three service components. These are:

  • Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS) – Focuses on activities contributing to the general welfare and betterment of life of the community.
  • Literacy Training Service (LTS) – Trains students to teach literacy and numeracy skills to school children and out-of-school youth.
  • Reserved Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) – Provide military training to college students. Benilde does not offer this NSTP component. You will need to cross-enroll to DLSU Manila or Adamson University if you choose to take this.

What should I do if I choose ROTC as my preferred NSTP component?

If you chose ROTC as your NSTP component, you need to facilitate

your cross-enrollment to either De La Salle University-Manila or Adamson University where ROTC is offered. To do this:

  1. Write a letter of request to cross-enroll for ROTC addressed to our school registrar, Miss Ma. Socorro A. Bacay.
  2. Indicate your reason for cross-enrollment in your letter.
  3. Have your letter endorsed by the Academic Extension Program Chairperson, Miss Myla San Gabriel.

Is the ROTC uniform already included in the tuition fees to be paid in the other school?

You can ask this and other details about ROTC to the Registrar’s Office of the school where you’ll be cross-enrolling.

I’m a student from another school and I’d like to take NSTP in Benilde; how can I do this?

Talk to your school registrar about the cross-enrollment procedures of your school.

When are the classes for CWTS and LTS held?

Take note of this schedule when you choose a component and enroll for NSTP so you can plan your class schedule.

NSTP-01 CWTS classes are scheduled from Monday – Saturday.

NSTP-01 LTS classes are scheduled on Saturdays.

NSTP-02 classes for CWTS and LTS can fall on a Friday or a Saturday.

Once enrolled on a particular component, you need to take the same component both for NSTP-01 and NSTP-02.

Can I still change my chosen NSTP component?

You can change your NSTP component until the online adjustment. Note that after that, you can no longer change your chosen component for both NSTP-01 and NSTP-02.

Am I allowed to take a different component for NSTP-02?

No, since NSTP-01 is a prerequisite to NSTP-02, you need to take the same component for both courses.

Will I do fieldwork in NSTP-01?

All classes are online. Also, NSTP-01 focuses more on lecture, discussion, and class interaction for you to have a better understanding of social realities. You will apply these concepts through a project addressing the needs of the community or partner center in NSTP-02.
